2024 Cannes Film Festival All Updates

The bugle of the ten-day Cannes Film Festival to be held in Cannes City France has started. The films to be shown in various sections of the festival were announced on Thursday, which include films from around the world. The 77th Cannes Film Festival will be held from May 14 to May 25.

This year's festival has become special for Indians because its most prestigious Palme d'Or i.e. Golden Palm Award has been given to writer-director Payal Kapadia's film All We Imagine As Light. Got a chance to compete. This is a big achievement because Payal's film has got such an opportunity after 30 years. The previous Indian film to be shown in this section is the 1994 Swaham, directed by Shaji N Karun.

All We Imagine as Light is an Indo-French film. The story revolves around a nurse, Prabha, who receives a gift from her husband after a long time. Prabha's relations with her husband have been bad for a long time. Her roommate is looking for a private room to spend time with her boyfriend. One day both of them go on a road trip, where their lives take a new turn. Anurag Kashyap has congratulated Payal on this achievement.

In the Palme Dior Awards section, All We Imagine as Light will have to compete with films from several leading international filmmakers, including Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, Shawn Baker's Anora, Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness, Paul Schrader's Oh Canada, Magnus Von Horn's The Girl with the Needle and Paolo Sorrentino's Parthenope. The jury for the competition section will be headed by Barbie director Greta Gerwig.

Apart from these films, British Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri's Santosh will be shown in the Un Certain Regard section. With Quentin Dupieux's The Second Act the 77th Cannes Film Festival will open on May 14, 2024.

Who is Payal Kapadia?

Payal Kapadia grew up in Mumbai. He holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from St. Xavier's College. After this, he took a master's degree from Sophia College. Kapadia studied filmmaking at the Film and Television Institute of Pune. His documentary A Night Of Knowing Nothing received the Golden Eye Award at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

Indian films at the Cannes Film Festival

The first Indian film to be selected in the Competition section of the Cannes Film Festival is 1946's Neecha Nagar, directed by Chetan Anand. However, the biggest award at that time was the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film. The Palme Dior Award started in 1955.

Neecha Nagar had won this award. After Neecha Nagar, V Shantaram's Amar Bhupali in 1952, Raj Kapoor's Awara in 1953, Satyajit Ray's Parsh Pathar in 1958, MS Sathyu's Garam Hawa in 1974, and Mrinal Sen's Khariz in 1983 had competed for the Palm Dior Award. However, she was not successful in winning the award.
