The singer, who has sung many memorable songs in Tamil cinema, is survived by her singer-husband AV Ramanan, and their son Vignesh Ramanan. The reason behind the singer's death is still unknown. Uma Ramanan got recognition from the song 'Poongathaave Thal Thiravai' which is from the Tamil film 'Nizhalgal'. This gave her career a boost and she worked with Ilaiyaraaja in more than 100 songs. Apart from Ilaiyaraaja, she also sang for composers like Vidyasagar, Mani Sharma, and Deva. Uma Ramanan's sang her last song was 'Kannum Kannumthaan Kalandachu' for Vijay's film 'Thirupachi'. The song she sang was composed by Mani Sharma with Harish Raghavendra and Premji Amren.
