Born on 17 May 1951 in Jetpur, Pankaj Udhas belonged to a landlord family. He was the youngest of three brothers. His elder brother Manhar Udhas was a well-known singer in the cinema world. His other brother Nirmal Udhas was also a well-known ghazal singer. Manoj Udhas was inspired to take up singing by his elder brother Manhar.

When Manhar used to be a stage performer, Pankaj was just five years old. Seeing his brother singing, he also had a desire to become a singer and then his father put him in a music institute. Pankaj Udhas gave his first stage performance in 1962 during the Indo-China war. He sang 'O people of my country'. This song of Pankaj was liked so much at that time that people gifted him Rs 51.
